Printer of Catalogues, Magazines & Newspapers

George Georgantzakos, the founder of Spotpress, migrates to Australia at the age of 33. He has just twenty dollars in his pocket and spends the next two years in low-paying labour jobs. George makes his foray into the world of newspaper publishing when he purchased a small Greek language weekly newspaper. Penniless but determined, George spends late nights single-handedly writing all the editorial content, selling the advertising space, printing the newspaper on the letterpress printing press and then distributing it to the Greek grocery stores throughout Sydney’s inner city suburbs. George’s foray into publishing lasts just one year – his newspaper goes bust. However, George has come out with the skill and knowledge of letterpress printing. That year he opens a small print shop in the Sydney suburb of Newtown where he once again, single-handily prints invitation cards, business cards, letterheads, calendars and invoice books. The business starts growing, leading to investments in additional printing equipment and an expansion of the premises into the adjoining building. However, George has envisaged yet a larger printing operation – one that caters to his passion for newspapers. On April 1981, with a mortgage on his home and capital raised from a handful of friends who have faith in him, George purchases a four unit Goss Community newspaper press and launches Spotpress – a business focused solely on newspaper manufacturing. Operating with just 8 staff out and out of a tiny 500 square metre factory in the Sydney suburb of Glebe, the first few years will prove extremely difficult. However, through shear determination and extraordinary effort, Spotpress managed to secure a handful of valuable, albeit small, newspaper clients. One by one, clients come onboard and by 1986, the business has outgrown its facilities and thus relocates to larger premises in Marrickville. A new Goss Community press is ordered to serve the broad base of community and multicultural newspapers that now underpin Spotpress.

George’s two sons, John and Dimitri, officially join the company and assume roles in the accounting and IT departments respectively.

Our expertise in newspaper printing guarantees excellent quality.
