Christopher’s Cake Shop is one of Australia’s oldest cake shops that has been in operation since 1955.

There are now 6 cake stores across Sydney serving the best cakes around. Drop in for a coffee and experience some tasty and traditional greek desserts, you won’t be disappointed!

A brief History of how Christopher’s Cake Shop became to be what it is today:

1955 – Chris Koumi opens the Athens Cake Shop at 409 Bourke Street Surry Hills. The first Greek Cake shop in Sydney, if not Australia.

1962 – At the age of eleven, Andrea Vasiliou migrates to Australia and meets her father for the first time.

1963 – Christopher Panayi, aged twelve, leaves school to support his family, moving from the village of Kambi to the City of Lefkosia, Cyprus. After working a number of odd jobs he finally ends up in Ariston Cake shop.

1972 – Andrea Vasilou makes a trip back to her birth place in Cyprus. Whilst purchasing some sweets at Ariston Cake Shop, she was spoted by young Christopher who offered to buy the beautiful girl from Australia an ice-cream, she accepted. Three months later, they were engaged. Christopher and his new bride moved to Australia to begin a new life. On arriving in Sydney Christopher started as a pastry chef at Athens Cake shop.

1976 – With partner Fano Papcharalambous, Christopher buys the Athens Cake Shop from Chris Koumi.

1987 – After separating from partner Fano, Christopher keeps the Surry Hills store and begins trading as Athenaiko Cake Shop.

1990 – Christopher is joined in the shop first by his eldest son, Peter, followed by Kyriakos in 1991 and finally youngest son, Anthony, in 1998.

2000 – Christopher Panayi and sons open a second store Christopher’s Athenaiko Cake Shop in Mascot.

2001 – ‘Athenaiko’ was dropped from the name and the store is now known as Christophers Cake Shop.

2005 – Christophers Cake Shop celebrates 50 Years and a piece from a marble bench where Christopher crafted his art was saved and engraved to celebrate the occasion.

2006 – A third store opens at the Kogarah Town Centre. (Shop 4a, Kogarah Town Centre, 1 Railway Parade, NSW 2217)

2014 – New stores open at Miranda and  Royal Randwick Shopping Centre. (Shop 49, Royal Randwick Shopping Centre, 73 Belmore Road, NSW 2031)

2015 – Christopher’s Cake Shop celebrates 60 years.

2016 – New store opens at Hurstville. (Level 1, Shop 105 Fresh Food Westfield Hurstville Cnr Cross Street and Park Road)

2018 – New stores open at Kirrawee, Ashfield & Eastgardens. (Level 1, Shop 170 Fresh food Westfield Eastgardens Fresh food | Ashfield Mall Shop 10 Fresh Food 260A Liverpool Road Ashfield NSW 2131 | South Village Shop G21, 580 Princes Highway Kirrawee NSW 2232)

2019 – New store opens at Blacktown. (Westpoint Shopping Centre Shop 1072 Fresh Food, 17 Patrick Street Blacktown NSW 2148)
